What Jolly Fellows Is About
In Odessa the shepherd Kostya Potekhin is mistaken for an international concert star. He falls in love with Anyuta and keeps up the role of the star for her sake, and through a cascade of comic musical numbers he ends up actually leading a jazz band, playing the Odessa music hall and heading on to Moscow and the Bolshoi. Grigori Aleksandrov’s film counts as the first Soviet musical comedy. Isaak Dunayevsky wrote the music, Lyubov Orlova became a star with it, and Leonid Utyosov appeared with his own orchestra. It was among the six best films shown at Venice in 1934.
