What Volga - Volga Is About

Grigori Aleksandrov's 1938 Soviet musical comedy takes place on a steamer on the Volga. Two separate amateur troupes are trying to reach a music olympiad in Moscow and spend the journey working against each other. Strelka, the postal worker played by Lyubov Orlova, is at the centre of it. It is widely said to have been Stalin's favourite film; the claim is repeated often and explains nothing about the film by itself. What is clear is this: 1938 was the year of the great purge, and this cheerful comedy was made in exactly that year. One of the best-known examples of the Soviet musical.
