What Spring Is About
In Grigori Aleksandrov’s 1947 musical comedy, Lyubov Orlova plays both leads: a severe woman scientist working on harnessing solar energy, and the light-hearted stage singer being courted to portray her in a film. Since they are identical, they swap places, and each finds in the other’s life the thing missing from her own. The picture is really about the making of a picture, which lets it spend most of its running time teasing the studio system that produced it, with Faina Ranevskaya and Rostislav Plyatt supplying much of the comedy. It was shot in Moscow and at the Barrandov studios in Prague. At Venice, Aleksandrov took an international prize for story and direction and Orlova a special prize for her performance.
