What Jonah Who Will Be 25 in the Year 2000 Is About
Outside Geneva a handful of people in their thirties take stock of what is left of the great promise of the sixties. Max is a former Trotskyist scraping by as a copy editor and satisfied with nothing; Marie gives pensioners unauthorised discounts at her supermarket till; others look for new meaning on a shared farm. Alain Tanner wrote the script with John Berger and gave every character a name beginning with the same syllable. Jonah, who gives the film its title, is the child who by the arithmetic of that title turns twenty five in the year 2000, and every hope is loaded onto him because there is nowhere else to put it.
