What Return from Africa Is About
A young Swiss couple living in Geneva, Vincent and Francoise, plan to leave the city and settle in Africa; a friend of theirs living in Algeria has promised to find them work there. Preparing to go rearranges their life from the ground up, and the time of that preparation becomes the film’s real subject. The account builds no great event; it looks at the gap between the story two people tell themselves and the state they are actually in. It asks a question often heard in Swiss cinema of the seventies: is the place one is going to really a place, or is it just the name for getting away from here. Josee Destoop and Francois Marthouret appear in Alain Tanner’s hundred and three minute French language film, completed in 1973.
