Messidor

Jeanne is a history student who wants to drop her studies and get out into the country. Hitching a lift, she meets Marie. Marie works in a shop and is on her way to her mother’s. At the last moment the two of them change their plans and decide to hitchhike around Switzerland. What starts as a game grows heavier as it goes on. When their money runs out they turn to crime, and the crimes get larger. The people they meet on the road cut them off from society altogether. In the end they kill a man and there is no place left to go back to. Clémentine Amouroux and Catherine Rétoré take the leads in Alain Tanner’s French and Swiss coproduction of 1979.
