What Jungle Child Is About
Sabine is a child born in Germany. Her father is a linguist, and to record a language that has never been written down he takes the family into the forest in West Papua. They begin living among the Fayu. Sabine grows up there: she speaks Fayu, learns to shoot a bow, and takes the forest for her home. When she is sent to Europe to study years later, that is where she finds out what being foreign actually is. Roland Suso Richter adapted the film from Sabine Kuegler's bestselling account of her own childhood, with Thomas Kretschmann as the father and Nadja Uhl as the mother. It was shot in Indonesia. What the film is really about is not adapting to the forest but the disconnection that comes with going back.
