What After the Truth Is About

The film opens on an openly invented premise: Josef Mengele, the camp doctor of Auschwitz, is alive, returns to Germany in his eighties and is brought to court. The young lawyer asked to defend him, Peter Rohm, is among the people who know Mengele's crimes best, and taking the case puts both his marriage and his life at risk. Roland Suso Richter's 1999 film was attacked hard in Germany on the grounds that it gave Mengele a human face. In fact Mengele was never tried; he died in Brazil in 1979. That distinction is worth holding on to while watching.
