Just Don't Think I'll Scream

Frank Beauvais's 2019 French film contains not a single new image. In 2016 Beauvais found himself alone in a village in Alsace: his relationship over, no car, no job, and over four months he watched more than four hundred films. The film is assembled from short pieces cut out of them, with the director's own voice over the top describing the separation, the late relationship he built with his father through cinema and the general atmosphere in France at the time. The images do not illustrate what is said; most of the time they merely sit alongside it and carry the scatter of a mind. The result is both a diary and a criticism of how films are consumed. It is short and fast, cutting constantly. It screened in Berlin. Who it's for: viewers who like essay films and experiments in editing. Who it's not for: anyone looking for story and character; the film is an inner voice and a pile of images.
