What Just Pals Is About
Bim is taken for the most useless man in town and nobody expects anything of him. That starts to shift when he takes in Bill, a thirteen year old thrown off a passing freight train. Mary, the young teacher Bim quietly adores, gets the boy into school, and Bim in turn helps her cover a debt her unreliable boyfriend walked away from. John Ford made it in 1920, credited as Jack Ford; it was his first picture for Fox after leaving Universal. Fifty minutes with Buck Jones well away from his western star persona, and often read as a forerunner of Chaplin's The Kid.
