Marsalis Wilson What K-12 Is About
Cry Baby is sent to a boarding school whose grand exterior hides a staff that keeps the students’ minds under control. Bullied by classmates who have stopped thinking for themselves, she and her best friend begin resisting the institution itself. Melanie Martinez turns her album of the same name into one continuous film, each song becoming a pastel and faintly poisonous set piece, and the result sits between musical and gothic horror without fully committing to either. The design does more talking than the plot does, which appears to be exactly the intention.
