King of the Doormen

Seyit arrives in Istanbul with his wife and two children and takes a job as the doorman of a large apartment building, while his wife cleans in the flats. Seyit quickly learns the building's real order: who is hiding what, who is afraid of whom. Beneath the helpful doorman is a man running calculations, and he takes over the running of the building by degrees. Zeki Ökten made it from a screenplay by Umur Bugay. The comedy comes out of the character's cunning, while the building itself stands behind it as a map of class. Kemal Sunal leads and won best actor at Antalya, the first performer to take that prize for a comic role. Who it is for: viewers who like Turkish cinema of the seventies and Kemal Sunal. Who it is not for: anyone who will find the period's treatment of its women characters uncomfortable.
