Queer World

Mehmet lives in a shanty house with his wife and children. At night he plays clarinet at a nightclub; by day he writes songs, believing one of them will catch. The house belongs to his brother-in-law, who sells it to a developer, and the family is out on the street. To pay rent Mehmet starts working days as well: a second job, a third, no sleep. The notebook of songs is left in a corner. What the film shows is that what the man lost was not the house but that notebook. Zeki Ökten directs the Turkish film; ninety-one minutes, with Kemal Sunal as Mehmet and Jale Aylanç and Cezmi Baskın in the cast. It is one of the few films in which Sunal steps outside comedy. Ökten had already made Sürü and Düşman, and he is looking at the same thing here: people trying to get a grip on the city.
