Karol G: Tomorrow Was Beautiful

Karol G grew up in Medellín. Her father worked in music and took his daughter to competitions. For years nothing happened; labels would not take her, a contract was cancelled and at one point she thought of stopping. Then a song landed. The documentary follows that rise and the world tour that came after. The camera follows her on stage, in the rehearsal room, in the studio and with her family. The tour is at stadium scale and it is the first time she is preparing a show of that size. Cristina Costantini directs. Karol G, her family and the producers she works with appear. The documentary was released on 8 May. It follows the making of the album Mañana Será Bonito and the tour of the same name; the film's title refers to that album. The matter it treats is being a woman in the business; the documentary takes the obstacles facing women in Latin music as a direct subject. Early recordings are used; home video shot by the family is part of its material. The narrative does not hide the periods of failure and the records of rejection are shown. The tour sections show the staging and the technical preparation in detail. Its limit is viewpoint; it was made together with the artist's company and the critical distance is limited. Who it is for: anyone curious about music documentary and the history of Latin pop. Who it is not for: the viewpoint is partisan, the structure conventional, and it is closed to anyone who does not know the music.
