Kaun?

A woman is alone in the house. On television comes news that a serial killer is loose. The doorbell rings. Outside is a man she does not know, and he wants to come in. She refuses at first, then lets him. Later a second man arrives. Three people stay in the same house and none of them is sure who the others are. The screenplay for Ram Gopal Varma's film was written by Anurag Kashyap. It runs ninety minutes, has no songs, three characters, and takes place entirely in one house. That was an extremely unusual structure in Indian cinema at the time. All the tension in the narrative comes from the viewer not knowing who anyone is, and the film withholds that until the last moment. Urmila Matondkar plays the woman and Manoj Bajpayee the first man to arrive. Who it's for: Viewers who like single-location thrillers, Indian genre cinema, and minimal structures. Who it's not for: The explanation at the end will not satisfy every viewer. The acting register is also overplayed in places.
