What Kenny & Company Is About

Four days before Halloween, twelve-year-old Kenny, his best friend Doug and the younger Sherman are getting ready, while also dealing with the local bully, with Kenny’s first crush, and with the fact that his old dog is dying. Don Coscarelli tells it without condescending to the children and without inflating anything. What is strange about the film is its timing: the path usually credited to E.T., Stand By Me and The Breakfast Club had in fact been walked here a few years earlier, but it arrived before the teen-film boom and got missed. Coscarelli went on to make Phantasm, taking A. Michael Baldwin and Reggie Bannister with him.
