Kenny Dalglish

The documentary follows Kenny Dalglish from Celtic to Liverpool, through his playing career and then his management. Football is not at its centre: the deaths of ninety-six supporters at Hillsborough in 1989 are, along with how Dalglish and his wife Marina answered the funerals, the families and a city's grief. The film is not interested in a career. It is interested in a man made to carry a club's pain: in that period he attended a funeral almost every day, and the weight eventually took him out of the job. The film tells it as a cost rather than a heroism. The form rests on archive: hundreds of hours of match footage, home video and previously unseen private recordings. Dalglish narrates; there is almost no talking-head footage, with voices laid over image. Asif Kapadia directed, continuing the method he built on Senna and Amy: telling a story with archive and voice, shooting nothing new. Marina, Graeme Souness and Alan Hansen are among the speakers. It premiered at the Rome Film Festival in 2025, played cinemas for one night on 29 October and went to Prime Video on 4 November. Who it is for: viewers who like football history and Kapadia's archive method. Who it is not for: anyone expecting an impartial portrait. The film rests on Dalglish's own account and barely touches the disputed decisions of his managerial years.
