Kid

A seven year old boy, his older brother Billy and their mother, who lives with depression, are on a farm. The household is already barely holding; then something heavy happens to the family and the children are left on their own. The account does not explain what happened and stays at the children’s eye level; the world of the grown ups is heard only in half caught conversations. The film tells pain not by staging it but by the continuing of daily work: the animals must be fed, the table laid, school attended. That insistence is the most shaking part of the film. The account does not fully tell the viewer what happened either; it gives no more information than the children have. Bent Simons plays the lead in Fien Troch’s ninety minute Belgian film, completed in 2012.
