What Kika Is About
A make-up artist meets a man she is preparing for burial when he turns out to be alive. Everything in her flat is being watched by a television programme. The film sets up a criticism of media: a show that broadcasts real crime footage gets close enough to provoke the events. While making that criticism the narrative plays an assault it depicts as comedy, and that choice became one of the director's most criticised decisions. Pedro Almodovar wrote and directed, with Veronica Forque and Victoria Abril, and costumes by Jean Paul Gaultier. A real warning: a long rape scene is given in a comic register and is distressing. Do not come to it expecting the director's more measured work.
