What Killswitch Is About
The documentary asks whose hands the internet will end up in: whether communication, culture, free expression and innovation will be controlled by a handful of large companies or by the people using them. Net neutrality, copyright law and surveillance are treated as parts of the same story. It moves through two figures: Aaron Swartz, who faced severe charges for opening academic papers to the public and died in 2013 at twenty-six, and Edward Snowden, who exposed state surveillance. Lawrence Lessig and Tim Wu also speak. It is openly an advocacy film, and the opposing case is never heard here in its own words.
