Koala Kumal

Raditya Dika's 2016 Indonesian film follows a writer who cannot write after his fiancée cheats on him. Dika has a book to deliver and cannot manage a line; a fearless woman he meets pulls him outside. The humour comes from the block itself. Dika narrates his own helplessness and the narrative never takes it to the point of pity; the other person's own troubles enter the story too. Dika directs and stars, adapting from his own books. The tone is light and the narrative follows the romantic comedy pattern, though the close does not go where it is expected to. Who it's for: those who like Indonesian romantic comedy. Who it's not for: viewers expecting dense plotting; the film proceeds largely through talk and voiceover.
