What Köroğlu Is About

Ruşen Ali is the son of Yusuf, groom to the Bey of Bolu. The Bey asks him to raise a horse without equal, to be presented to the sultan; when he dislikes the colt Yusuf brings, he treats it as an insult and has the man blinded. The son, who raised that colt alongside his father, becomes Köroğlu, the son of the blind man, and takes to the mountains swearing to settle the account. Atıf Yılmaz’s film is the Yeşilçam version of the Köroğlu epic told across Anatolia for centuries. Ayşe Şasa wrote the screenplay, Cüneyt Arkın plays Köroğlu and Fatma Girik the woman opposite him, with cinematography by Gani Turanlı and Memduh Ün producing. The film pushes forward the folk side of the epic, the man who stands against unjust rule and makes the mountains his home.
