Aaahh Belinda

Serap is a successful stage actress who refuses, in her own life, the roles assigned to women. She agrees to appear in a shampoo commercial. When the shoot ends she finds herself inside the life of the woman in that advert, Naciye, a housewife with two children, and she cannot get out. Nobody believes her, because to everyone around her she has always been Naciye. Atıf Yılmaz attaches a fantastical premise directly to a social question: how possible is it for a woman to live as herself. The horror in the film is not a monster but the ordinary daily routine inside an ordinary home. Barış Pirhasan wrote the screenplay, Müjde Ar takes the lead and Macit Koper is among the cast. It competed at the twenty third Antalya Golden Orange film festival and won best film, best director and best actress. Its flaw is that in places it states its argument too plainly, and the ending closes off the discussion. Who it is for: anyone curious about the women's films of Turkish cinema in the 1980s. Who it is not for: viewers who arrive expecting a single clear genre.
