Mill Horse

Ali is an honest civil servant and comes to Istanbul when he is posted there. He moves into the house of his sister Hacer and her husband Yakup. On his first day at the new job he runs into bribery and says something about it. Starting with his own manager, everyone becomes uncomfortable with him; he is the only one disturbing the arrangement. Yakup, meanwhile, is collecting money from the neighbourhood to build a mosque, and he disappears with it. The film, directed by Atıf Yılmaz, is about the civil service, bribery and the price of staying honest at the start of the eighties. The title says it too: a mill horse is the animal that turns endlessly in the same place and gets nowhere. İlyas Salman plays Ali and Şener Şen plays Yakup, and their encounters are the best parts of the film. Ayşen Gruda and Yaprak Özdemiroğlu are also in the cast. Ninety minutes. The comedy mould is there but the ending is not light.
