La cravate

Bastien is twenty and has spent five years as an activist in France's largest far-right party. When the 2017 presidential campaign starts, his superiors want more from him: put on a tie, learn to speak, look respectable. Bastien starts imagining a career. But his past comes with him; the skinhead years and the old record of violence do not fit the party's new face. Etienne Chaillou and Mathias Théry directed it together. Their method is unusual: they turn Bastien's life into a written text and have him read it aloud, and the film runs on that voice. Ninety-seven minutes. It neither exonerates Bastien nor puts him on display; it shows the machinery that drew him in.
