What La Promesse Is About
Fifteen year old Igor has grown up inside the operation his father Roger runs, selling work and housing to undocumented labourers; lying, swindling and small theft are ordinary parts of the day, and Igor is attached to him. When an African worker dies on the site, he first extracts a promise from Igor to look after his wife and baby. Igor wants to keep it, and the price is betraying his father. The Dardenne brothers keep the camera on the boy’s shoulder, use no music, and show the moral decision without explaining it. Jérémie Renier plays Igor and Olivier Gourmet the father.
