What Tori and Lokita Is About
Lokita and young Tori, arrived in Belgium from Cameroon, present themselves as siblings, because a claim of family ties improves Lokita's chance of a residence permit. The papers do not hold up, and once she is refused she has to work illegally, at a cannabis operation cut off from the outside. Tori tries to find her. Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne shot it with their usual method: no music, the camera following from behind, nothing explained. At the centre is how bureaucracy manufactures a chain of crime, with two children entering an illegal route because the legal one is closed. It received a special prize for the festival's seventy-fifth year at Cannes. It is short and it ends hard. Who it is for: viewers who like the Dardenne brothers and social realism. Who it is not for: anyone looking for hope.
