Heera grows up in the care of an alcoholic named Gangu and takes his own name from a stray dog. During one of Gangu’s drunken rages he learns that he is an orphan. Years later he is a young man working for Mahendar Singh and in love with Mohini, who wants nothing to do with a man who cannot name his parents, and he sets out to find out who they were. The only person who might know is Gangu, who can barely finish a sentence. Prakash Mehra directed, in the run of angry young man films that defined Amitabh Bachchan’s decade. The song Mere Angne Mein is performed twice, first by a young Alka Yagnik and later by Bachchan himself in drag, and that second version is what people remember.
