As a child Vijay witnessed his parents' murder; he did not see the killer's face and remembers only the bracelet with a horse on his wrist. He grew up into a hard policeman who takes no bribes. He stands alone against the city's criminal order, is transferred again and again, and finally resigns and decides to settle the account himself. The man in front of him is the killer he has been looking for. Prakash Mehra directed the film from a screenplay by Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar, and it opened an era in Indian cinema. Several stars had turned the part down; it fell to Amitabh Bachchan, who was not doing well at the box office at the time, and the film made him a star overnight. The character of Vijay became the start of the angry young man type and shaped Indian cinema for a decade. It is counted as the turning point from romantic films to action.
