Sharaabi

1984 · 180 min · Director: Prakash Mehra

Sharaabi (1984) is a romance, directed by Prakash Mehra. It stars Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Prada. The 180-minute film holds an audience score of 6.5/10.

What Sharaabi Is About

Prakash Mehra’s sixth film with Amitabh Bachchan follows a businessman who buries himself in work after his wife dies, and the son who grows up unseen. By adulthood the son is a drinker, estranged from his father and indifferent to everyone else, and Bachchan turns the drunk act into a kind of charm the whole film rests on. Jaya Prada plays opposite him, Kadar Khan wrote the dialogue, and Bappi Lahiri’s songs are remembered on their own terms. Seen from here, the most questionable thing about it is that the drinking is offered as a trait, even as a form of vindication, rather than as a problem. It opened on 18 May 1984 and became the third biggest earner of the year.
