What Lady of the Night Is About
Two baby girls are born in the same city, close to one another, but grow up at opposite ends of society: Molly is the daughter of a thief, Florence the daughter of the judge who sent that thief to prison. Their paths cross when they turn eighteen; Florence leaves the shelter of an exclusive school and Molly, now orphaned, comes out of reform school. Two separate lives in the same city touch at one point, and the matter becomes who is taken to belong where. Norma Shearer plays both parts; in the scenes where the two appear in one frame her double was Joan Crawford, still called Lucille Le Sueur at the time. Monta Bell’s seventy minute American silent film was completed in 1925.
