What Lapitch the Little Shoemaker Is About
Hlapić, a shoemaker’s apprentice, can bear his master’s harshness no longer and sets out one morning with his dog. On the road he meets Gita, who has run away from a circus, and together the two go after a thief working his way through the towns; what was stolen from the master’s workshop turns out to be connected to him as well. The animation turned the human characters of the book into animals; Hlapić here is a little mouse and the villain is a rat. Milan Blažeković’s eighty three minute Croatian animation was adapted from the classic children’s novel by Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić and was drawn by hand. It was completed in 1997, became one of the most watched productions in Croatia and was sent as the country’s foreign language film Oscar entry that year.
