What The Magician's Hat Is About
Thistle the magician joins forces with his animal friends in the forest, with fairies and with a dragon living in a volcano to defend the woods against the Ice Emperor Frostkill and his army of ice witches. Milan Blazekovic directed it as a sequel to The Elm-Chanted Forest from 1986. It comes out of the long animation tradition of Zagreb, and its hand drawn frames already looked old fashioned in their own day, which now gives the film a particular warmth. It opened in 1990, just before Yugoslavia came apart. Made for children, but not afraid to frighten them.
