What The Elm-Chanted Forest Is About
A painter falls asleep under a magic elm in the forest. When he wakes he finds he can talk to the animals there. But the gift is not permanent; after a set time it will go. Meanwhile the Cactus King is about to turn the forest into desert. The painter has to use the time he has to save it. Milan Blažeković's Croatian animation was made at the Zagreb Film studio and was shown abroad as well. The drawing is by hand and the style is markedly different from American animation. The source is a book by Sunčana Škrinjarić. The film is aimed at children but takes up the question of the environment directly, and a sequel followed.
