In America just after the war, a confidence man promises a woman who lost her husband at the front a memorial that will never be built, in order to take the money she has saved. While working the scheme he falls in love with her and his conscience begins to trouble him, but when he wants out he finds his own boss in the way, a man used to backing up his arguments with muscle and a gun. There is also the boss’s girl: taken with the con man, jealous and dangerous. George Sherman’s eighty nine minute American film was adapted from The Velvet Fleece, a novel by Lois Eby and John Fleming. John Payne, Joan Caulfield, Dan Duryea and Shelley Winters appear; it was completed in 1948 and makes postwar grief itself the ground for a swindle.
