What The Sleeping City Is About
A young intern is shot on the pier beside Bellevue Hospital and the police cannot even find a motive. Fred Rowan, a detective who served as an army medic, goes in undercover as an intern, and what he finds before he finds the killer is a system: young doctors run out of time, sleep and above all money, pushed a little further to the edge every day. The film was shot in New York inside Bellevue itself. When Mayor William O’Dwyer decided the hospital’s name would be damaged, a prologue was added in which Richard Conte addresses the camera to say the story is entirely fictional.
