What Last Images of the Shipwreck Is About
Roberto sells insurance; he travels between home and work on a crowded subway, with an unhappy marriage at one end and an empty desk at the other, and his only dream is to write a novel. One evening at the station he sees a young woman about to take her own life and stops her. Meeting Estela gives him the material he had been looking for, and he starts writing with her at the centre of the book. Then the two of them travel out together to see her family, who live in a nearly ruined house beyond the last stop on the line. The film was shot in the middle of the Argentine economic collapse of 1989 and was read as the picture of a society going under. Lorenzo Quinteros plays the lead in Eliseo Subiela’s hundred and thirty one minute film, completed in 1989.
