What Le Navire Night Is About
The story the film tells is this: a woman dying of leukaemia lives alone in her wealthy father’s villa; a man works night shifts at a telephone company. They find each other over disused lines left over from the German occupation of Paris and talk for months, and they never meet. Marguerite Duras started shooting that story, gave up after a few days, and decided instead to record the film she could not make. What is on screen, therefore, is not the story: it is actors being prepared, empty Paris and slow pans. The narrative is built entirely in sound, through the voices of Duras and Benoît Jacquot. Bulle Ogier, Dominique Sanda and Mathieu Carrière are the people who would have played it. Pierre Lhomme shot the film.
