Marguerite Duras takes the entire soundtrack of her 1975 film India Song and uses it unchanged, while shooting all new images. We hear every line of that story about the wife of a French ambassador in the India of the thirties; what is on screen is abandoned rooms left to decay. What comes out is the ghost of a film: sound and image no longer tell the same thing, they come apart. The emptiness colonialism left behind sits inside that separation. Watching this one without having seen India Song means putting the story together from nothing. The voices of Delphine Seyrig and Michael Lonsdale are in the hundred and fourteen minute French production, completed in 1976.
