What Le Syndrome du Titanic Is About

The documentary is about an Earth whose resources and natural cycles are under pressure from an increasingly urban civilisation. The camera watches daily life in places as unlike one another as Tokyo, Lagos and Minneapolis, and sets scarcity, overconsumption, inequality in the sharing of resources and the limitless extraction of raw material down as parts of the same picture. It takes its name from the passengers who went on dancing in the ballroom as the iceberg approached: if the course does not change, the end is not in doubt. The ninety three minute French documentary by Nicolas Hulot and Jean-Albert Lièvre started from Hulot’s book of the same name, published in 2004. Hulot said the film is less an ecology documentary than a call to reason and a political act, which is why it deliberately contains no beautiful images of wild nature. It opened on 7 October 2009.
