What Le vie del Signore sono finite Is About
In Italy in the twenties a barber loses the woman he loves and stops being able to walk. There is nothing wrong with his legs; the illness belongs to grief rather than the body. Massimo Troisi directs and stars, and makes the pain funny quietly, almost apologetically. The title inverts an Italian saying: the ways of the Lord are said to be infinite, and this film says they have run out. The fascism of the period stands at the edge of the frame. The world came to know Troisi through Il Postino, which he finished while gravely ill and died right after.
