What Leftover Women Is About

In China a term meaning left over is applied by society to unmarried women past the age of twenty seven, and great pressure is put on them to marry. The documentary follows that pressure through three women: Qiu Hua Mei, a lawyer of thirty four, Xu Min, twenty eight, who works in radio, and Gai Qi, thirty six, who teaches at a university in Beijing. All three are successful in their work, but at the family table, in the marriage markets and at state organised matchmaking events they meet the same question. The eighty five minute documentary by Hilla Medalia and Shosh Shlam was completed in 2019 and shows how the women themselves refuse that description.
