Letter from the Mountain

Michiko and Takao leave their life in Tokyo and move away. Where they go is the remote mountain village Takao grew up in. The village is small and its people are old; life runs at the pace of the farming. Michiko has left her work in the city behind and has to build herself again in the new place. Takao writes; getting used to the village’s own rhythm takes time for both of them. The people of the village, illness and death all sit inside daily life. The film tells this without weighting it down, alongside the turning of the seasons. The work is adapted from a novel. Akira Terao and Kanako Higuchi appear in Takashi Koizumi’s hundred and twenty eight minute Japanese film, completed in 2002.
