What The Professor and His Beloved Equation Is About
A mathematics professor left brain-damaged by a car accident has a short-term memory that lasts eighty minutes. Every eighty minutes he meets again the single mother who keeps his house and her son; the relationship is built from nothing each day, and then built again. Takashi Koizumi adapted the film from Yōko Ogawa’s novel and tells it as the boy, now grown, looking back. The world of numbers is not a cold place here: when the professor talks about primes and amicable numbers he is describing the bond between people. It turns out to be the most durable thing a man with no memory is able to make.
