Wake Up Sid

Sid, the son of a wealthy family, does not care about university, does nothing, and lives on his father's money. When he fails his exams he is thrown out and takes shelter with Aisha, who has come from Calcutta wanting to write. Ayan Mukerji builds it not as a romance but as a story about responsibility; what Sid learns is less a profession than washing up, paying rent and standing decently beside someone. Ranbir Kapoor plays him without making him charming and Konkona Sen Sharma plays Aisha. The Mumbai monsoon is the visual signature. It is slow and light on incident, and a youth film this calm is rare in mainstream Indian cinema. Who it is for: viewers who like quiet Indian youth drama and stories about a city. Who it is not for: anyone wanting dense plot, since this stays inside ordinary days.
