Level Cross

Arfaz Ayub's 2024 Malayalam film follows a gatekeeper working alone at a railway crossing in the middle of a desert. A woman takes refuge there; she does not say who she is fleeing and he does not ask. The two begin sharing the same hut. The idea is two solitudes using each other. What each is hiding from the other opens slowly; the narrative proceeds in flashback and every new fact moves the previous scene elsewhere. The setting is almost entirely desert and hut, and the cinematography makes that emptiness an instrument of tension. Asif Ali and Amala Paul lead. The narrative delivers several explanations one after another in the final section and loses some of its effect. Who it's for: those who like Malayalam thrillers and single-location narratives. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a fast plot; the film says almost nothing for a long stretch.
