Liam Gallagher: As It Was

The documentary follows Liam Gallagher through the years after Oasis broke up. The second band he formed has collapsed, his marriage has ended, legal business drags on and he is not playing. Drink and anger keep him where he is. The film starts there and runs to the decision to make a record alone and go on tour. Charlie Lightening and Gavin Fitzgerald direct. It appeared in 2019. What works is Gallagher himself. He does not try to correct anything in front of the camera; he talks directly about his brother, about the mistakes he made, and about fame ending. His relationship with Noel is the place the film keeps returning to; Noel is not in it, present only as a name that is spoken. The documentary uses archive heavily, setting nineties Oasis footage next to the present, and the difference between them is its real account. It was shot with Gallagher's own people; there is no critical distance and the narrative is built as a comeback. Who it is for: viewers of Oasis and Britpop and anyone who likes music documentary. Who it is not for: it carries no narrative for someone uninterested in the band, it is one sided, and it leans on Gallagher's own account.
