What Life in Loops (A Megacities RMX) Is About
Timo Novotny takes Michael Glawogger's 1997 documentary Megacities apart and rebuilds it. Roughly a third of the material comes straight out of that film; the rest is footage Glawogger never used plus new sequences Novotny shot in Tokyo. Mexico City, New York, Moscow and Bombay run through the same stream until the whole thing plays as one enormous metropolis. It works far more as an editing and music experiment than as a documentary: the tracks the Sofa Surfers built drive the images, and the same human gestures keep looping back. Rhythm carries it rather than speech. It stands as both a proposal about how documentary might be assembled differently and a salute to the film it came from.
