What Life of Crime: 1984-2020 Is About
Jon Alpert's 2021 documentary follows three people in New Jersey across thirty-six years. Alpert began filming drug addiction and street crime in 1984 and never stopped returning to the same people, so that their prison terms, releases, attempts at treatment and returns to the beginning became one unbroken record. Its strength is that continuity: it shows through individuals how an addiction stretches across decades and how fragile stories of recovery are. Alpert does not stay behind the camera and intervenes at times, which is the most disputed thing about the film. The outcome is bleak and offers no hope. Who it's for: viewers who can take long-form documentary and honest accounts of addiction. Who it's not for: anyone who would rather not approach drug use, death and repeated failure; the film softens none of them.
