Liquid Truth

Rubens is a well-liked, easy-going swimming instructor. When one student's mother says he showed inappropriate affection toward her son, a mechanism starts running at the club immediately. Nobody knows what happened, the boy says nothing definite, there is no evidence. The other parents and his colleagues have no difficulty reaching a verdict. Carolina Jabor refuses to tell the viewer whether the accusation is true. That is not her interest. Her interest is how a community behaves in the face of suspicion. Group chats, parents' meetings, the management's calculation of risk; each step narrows the space around Rubens. Daniel de Oliveira plays Rubens. The film builds its tension not through events but through the tone of conversations. Who it's for: Viewers who like drama built on moral uncertainty, films that examine the mechanics of a pile-on, and Brazilian cinema. Who it's not for: The unanswered questions will frustrate some viewers, and the subject is delicate; an allegation of child abuse used as fictional material is not for everyone.
